Riverbend Environment
Education Center
Since 1974, Riverbend
Environmental Education Center
has been enriching the lives of
children and families through
engaging environmental
education.  From its beginnings
as a quiet nature preserve,
Riverbend has evolved to a
thriving center for environmental
education that touches the lives
of nearly 12,000 people annually.
At Riverbend, kids can just be
kids again, free to dig, touch,
build, explore and discover the
natural world around them.
Riverbend believes a steady
supply of sunshine, dirt & water
are essential ingredients for
healthy, happy children.  And they
are not alone; a growing body of
evidence supports the idea that
exposure to nature comprises a
vital part of children’s physical,
emotional and mental well-
being.

Since 1974, Riverbend Environmental Education Center has been enriching the
lives of children and families through engaging environmental education.  From its
beginnings as a quiet nature preserve, Riverbend has evolved to a thriving center
for environmental education that touches the lives of nearly 12,000 people
annually.  Whether it is to participate in a camp, school, scout or family program
or just to wander on their trails, a visit to Riverbend offers a quiet place to enjoy
and observe the wonders of nature.

The land on which Riverbend is situated once belonged to my father’s side of the
family, and as a child I played many times in the Riverbend Barn. Making this climb
up Rainier and doing it as a benefit for Riverbend is very exciting. I’m glad I have
this chance.

Why I’m making the climb
The Baby Boomer generation has worked hard at taking care of their physical
health. We all try to eat right, get plenty of exercise and do things that make us
stretch our goals. However, none of us are getting any younger……. So I wanted to
do something (before I loose my physical stamina) that I had never attempted
before, but something that is relatively safe.

For most of my life, I’ve been off-shore sailing. It’s a lot of fun; however it is not for
the faint-hearted. It makes you think twice before you jump in a boat and go out of
sight of land/family/worldly-news for 5 successive days. So I thought …….. well if I
can sail off to distant faraway places, then I surely can climb a mountain.
Yea……sure.

It was my squash opponent (not partner) that climbed Pikes Peak last year, and
got me thinking that maybe I could do something along this line. After-all, a few
years ago, I climbed into and then out of the Grand Canyon on a
2 day backpack
trip.

So what’s the big deal about getting roped together and climbing up to where you
can't breathe very well? I guess I’ll find out.
In August of 2008, I will attempt to summit Mt. Rainier in an
effort to raise awareness and support for

My Background
I’m Bill Read, and I have lived in Gladwyne most of my life. I grew up here and went
to college in Colorado where I was first exposed to the Rocky Mountains and their
magnificence. Besides sailing and playing squash, I like to volunteer time to give
something back to the community. For the past 20 years I have worked with Henkel
of America in Human Resources.
Henkel’s Association with Riverbend
Henkel has for many years felt that it’s employee ought
to give back to the communities where their employee
live and work. Each year they support charitable
organization and donate $XXX to this endeavour.
Henkel has been financially supporting Riverbend
since 2
004.
